Brothers

The following suggestions, on the relation and duties of a sister to her brother, are taken from a volume by the Author of this book, entitled, "Advice to Young Ladies on their Duties and Conduct in Life."]

OLDER brothers are not usually as attentive to their younger sisters as the latter would feel to be agreeable. The little girls that were so long known as children, with the foibles, faults, and caprices of children, although now grown up into tall young ladies, who have left or are about leaving school, are still felt to be children, or but a little advanced beyond childhood, by the young men who have had some three or four years' experience in the world. With these older brothers, there will not usually be, arising from this cause, much confidential and unreserved intercourse; at least, not until the sisters have added two or three years more to their ages, and assumed more of the quiet dignity of womanhood.

Upon these older brothers, therefore, the conduct of sisters cannot, usually, have much effect. They are removed to a point chiefly beyond the circle of their influence. But upon brothers near about their own age, and younger than themselves, the influence of sisters may be brought to bear with the most salutary results.

Falling in Love

An ancient and famous human institution is in pressing danger. Sir George Campbell has set his face against the time-honored practice of Falling in Love. Parents innumerable, it is true, have set their faces against it already from immemorial antiquity; but then they only attacked the particular instance, without venturing to impugn the institution itself on general principles. An old Indian administrator, however, goes to work in all things on a different pattern. He would always like to regulate human life generally as a department of the India Office; and so Sir George Campbell would fain have husbands and wives selected for one another (perhaps on Dr. Johnson's principle, by the Lord Chancellor) with a view to the future development of the race, in the process which he not very felicitously or elegantly describes as 'man-breeding.' 'Probably,' he says, as reported in _Nature_, 'we have enough physiological knowledge to effect a vast improvement in the pairing of individuals of the same or allied races if we could only apply that knowledge to make fitting marriages, instead of giving way to foolish ideas about love and the tastes of young people, whom we can hardly trust to choose their own bonnets, much less to choose in a graver matter in which they are most likely to be influenced by frivolous prejudices.' He wants us, in other words, to discard the deep-seated inner physiological promptings of inherited instinct, and to substitute for them some calm and dispassionate but artificial selection of a fitting partner as the father or mother of future generations.

Essay - A COMPUTERIZED WORLD

                     A COMPUTERIZED WORLD

Since the first computer was made in the late fifties,
the technology has developed extremely. Computers which took
the place of a living-room then, are now being made in
creditcard-formats. More and more areas are being taken over
by the computer.
As computers are capable of handling large amounts of
data in a very short time, they are well suited for
wordprocessing. I guess that it won't be long till all the
paper-archives are replaced by magnetic tapes and diskettes. A
diskette can contain much more data than a written page, and
it takes less place! It is possible to get the Norwegian
telephone book on just one diskette.

The Bermuda Triangle

                                                The Bermuda Triangle

For years, many planes and ships have disappeared in the area of the Bermuda Triangle. In my essay I'm going to try to find out and tell you, my fellow students, why this phenomenon is occurring.
The Bermuda Triangle is an area in the world located to the Southeast of the United States and it is also referred to as the "Devil's Triangle". The triangle is formed by drawing imaginary lines from Melbourne, Florida, to Bermuda, to Puerto Rico, and back to Melbourne, Florida. The area of the triangle is 440,000 square miles.

Essay - Books

Books?

Will the books as we know them cease to exist?
In the future, will children know what books are? Plain books in paper. Will they remember them? Many think not, because the computer is taking slowly over our lives. Soon every thing will be connected to one big network they say. Personally I have doubts. Yes, the computer is becoming more and more part of our everyday life, but we will not stop printing books. I don’t think anybody prefers to read a novel on a computer screen. No, to have a solid book between your hands is still the best.

Living Together

Living Together Before Marriage First, let's get some pre-conceived notions out of the way. I am not a religious zealot. I am not some pastor of a church. I am not some founder of a religious organization. I am not a preacher. I was not ordained by God. I am not a harsh judgmental person. I am however, simply 20 years old, struggling to walk with Christ, and my views come from the Bible. They were not taught to me by parents. My church did not teach me this. My youth leader did not tell me what to think. I simply sit down in the corner of my room, open up my Bible and read it, and tell people what I think; not what I FEEL is right, but what I THINK is right based on the Bible. Now let's face the subject at hand. First, I want to answer a question people may have,

Essay - Romanticism

Romanticism

Romanticism began in the mid—18th century and eached its height in the 19th century. It was limited to Europe and America although different compatriots donated to its birth and popularity. Romanticism as a movement declined in the late 19th century and early 20th century with the growing dominance of Realism in the arts and the rapid advancement of science and technology. However, Romanticism was very impressionative on most individuals during its time. This was because it was expressed in three main aspects of life: literature, art, and music.

Essay - Romeo And Juliet

Romeo And Juliet

“Romeo and Juliet is a play about two silly, immature teenagers who lack common sense.  Therefore, the play expresses the danger of a love in which two people become the whole world to one another.”  To what extent do you agree or disagree?

The story of Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy.  The two lovers go against their families and against their hate to be together but they don’t think about the consequences, which in the end are devastating.

Beat of the Future

Beat of the Future

If we allow the past to teach us anything, we will know that those who practiced courageous roles as young adults in their communities somehow are destined to govern our states and nations. The future of our country is in the hands of teens like myself, many of whom enjoy time committed to Beta club functions. The future of our great nation, and even the world for that matter, looks quite bright if in fact members of our Beta clubs are destined to solve our dilemmas and to arbitrate our differences. It is my firm belief that those of us who have seen the many problems of our society and who have dealt with these are confidently prepared for the

My Hobby

My  Hobby

My hobby is reading. I read story books, magazines, newspapers and any kind of material that I find interesting. This hobby got started when I was a little boy. I had always wanted my parents to read fairy tales and other stories to me. Soon they got fed up and tired of having to read to me continually. So as soon as I could, I learned to read. I started with simple ABC books. Soon I could read simple fairy tales and other stories. Now I read just about anything that is available.

A Nightmare

A  Nightmare

"Don't eat just before going to bed !" my mother used to tell me. "You might get a nightmare." How right she was. I never believed her until it happened to me.It was on a night when I felt hungry just as I was about to go to bed. So I made myself a peanut-butter sandwich and a large cold glass of milk. After consuming them I went to bed.

A Picnic by the Sea

A  Picnic by the Sea

Teluk Kemang is about 12 kilometres from Port Dickson town in Negeri Sembilan. It is a popular beach where many people go to and relax on.It was on one of the days of the Chinese New Year holidays that we had a picnic at Teluk Kemang. I went there with my uncle and his family. There were five of us, my uncle, his wife, their two young children and me. My uncle drove us there in his car.

My favourite time of the day

My favourite time of the day

My favourite time of the day is between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. This is the time when the sun is setting and the air is cooling down. At this time I either go for a stroll, play some games or sit quietly watching the activities around me.Sitting quietly doing nothing in particular is what I like most.
The compound surrounding my house is a fairly large one. So my father has planted many trees in it. Birds of all sorts come to the trees in the evening to sing their sweet songs. I just sit under my favourite rambutan tree and listen to these lovely songs.

My Neighbours

My  Neighbours

Many of us live in housing estates. I live in one myself. The one thing about living in a housing estate is that we have many neighbours.Next to my house on the right lives a family whose parents seem to be always scolding the children. I do not know them very well because they always appear angry. Never a day passes without hearing the children crying and the parents shouting at the top of their voices.

My Classmates

My  Classmates

We are a noisy lot, that is what our teachers say about us. This is largely due to Ah Keong. He is the noisiest of us all. His voice is like that of a bull frog but volumes louder. It seems that he cannot talk softly. Actually he does not talk, he shouts. Perhaps his living with his family of ten children has something to do with it.In this noisy bunch lives a boy who hardly ever opens his mouth. This is Padma, the boy who sits next to me. He is such a gentle and soft creature that one would think that he is a sissy. This is not so. No one dares call him one for he is a member of the school's Karate Club.

An unforgettable experience

An  unforgettable  experience

Carrying a passenger on a bicycle is an offence punishable by law. Everyone knows that but still some of us do it.
I had done it many times before until something happened to teach me never to do it again. It was not the police. Rather it was an unforgettable, and unpleasant, experience.
It happened one evening when my friend Segaran and I wanted to go and visit another friend who lived some distance away. I had a bicycle. Segaran did not. So, as usual, he sat side-saddle on the horizontal bar of the bicycle while I pedalled. We had done it many times before, so it should not be any problem.
